About Tindersticks

Tindersticks, formed in Nottingham in 1992 from the remnants of Asphalt Ribbons, quickly distinguished themselves as one of the UK’s most unique musical acts. Founded by vocalist Stuart Staples, keyboardist David Boulter, and violinist Dickon Hinchliffe, the band crafted a sound that fused the brooding romanticism of Leonard Cohen and Scott Walker with the quirky pop sensibilities of Lee Hazlewood. Their self-titled debut album (1993) earned critical acclaim and was named Album of the Year by Melody Maker, laying the foundation for a devoted cult following.

Known for their moody orchestrations, mumbling vocals, and densely layered compositions, Tindersticks developed music that often feels cinematic, resembling soundtracks to imaginary films. This quality naturally led to collaborations with filmmaker Claire Denis, scoring movies such as "Nénette et Boni" (1996) and "Trouble Every Day," deepening their reputation for richly textured, atmospheric soundscapes. Despite lineup changes in 2005-2006, with the departure of Hinchliffe and others, the core trio maintained creative momentum. They continued evolving with albums like "Can Our Love…" (2001), "The Something Rain" (2012), and the film-inspired "The Waiting Room" (2016), which paired each track with a short film by various directors.

In recent years, Tindersticks have embraced new directions, blending electronics on "Distractions" (2021) and returning to band-centered arrangements on "Soft Tissue" (2024). Over three decades, Tindersticks have remained a vital presence in alternative music, celebrated for poetic lyrics, moody instrumentation, and a timeless ability to balance introspective songwriting with cinematic grandeur.
