About Ata Kak

Ata Kak, born Yaw Atta-Owusu, is a Ghanaian musician whose groundbreaking 1994 cassette, "Obaa Sima," initially slipped under the radar in Ghana and Canada. This self-released album showcases a visionary fusion of highlife, Twi-language rap, funk, and disco, delivered with the passion of a Prince record and the raw, lo-fi charm reminiscent of early Chicago house music. For years, "Obaa Sima" remained a hidden gem until Brian Shimkovitz, founder of Awesome Tapes From Africa, discovered a rare copy in Cape Coast, Ghana, in 2002. Shimkovitz’s promotion of the album on his influential blog sparked a global resurgence of interest, leading to hundreds of thousands of downloads, YouTube views, and inspiring countless remixes and tributes.

After years of mystery regarding Ata Kak’s whereabouts, he resurfaced to perform live in London alongside a group of musicians who helped transform his bedroom-produced sound into a vibrant, dynamic concert experience. Since then, Ata Kak and his band have toured extensively, captivating audiences from Russia to Morocco and headlining major European festivals such as Glastonbury, Sonar, Field Day, and Dimensions. His unique blend of styles and DIY ethos has established him as one of the most enigmatic and influential artists of the internet age, continuing to win over adventurous music lovers around the world.
