About CHVRCHES

CHVRCHES is a Scottish synth-pop trio formed in Glasgow in 2011, consisting of vocalist Lauren Mayberry and keyboardists Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, who met while studying at the University of Strathclyde. Known for their distinctive spelling with a "v," the band blends indie sensibilities with polished, anthemic synth-pop, drawing inspiration from icons like Depeche Mode, New Order, Prince, and Kate Bush.

Their breakthrough came in 2012 with the viral debut track "Lies," followed by the critically acclaimed single "The Mother We Share." These early successes paved the way for their debut album, "The Bones of What You Believe" (2013), which reached number nine on the UK charts and earned gold certification. This album showcased their minimalist yet lush production, characterized by vivid synthesizers and Mayberry’s emotive vocals—a sound that positioned them as innovators bridging classic synth traditions with modern electronic music.

CHVRCHES continued to evolve with "Every Open Eye" (2015), which peaked at number four in the UK and featured collaborations such as Paramore’s Hayley Williams on "Bury It." Their third album, "Love Is Dead" (2018), saw a shift toward a more mainstream pop approach, working with producers Greg Kurstin and Dave Stewart, and featuring Matt Berninger of The National on the standout track "My Enemy." Their most recent release, "Screen Violence" (2021), marked their fourth UK Top Ten album, presenting darker, more polished themes and a notable collaboration with Robert Smith of The Cure. Across their discography, CHVRCHES has cemented their reputation as leaders in contemporary synth-driven pop, consistently blending indie roots with chart-friendly melodies and critical acclaim.
