About Type O Negative

Type O Negative emerged from Brooklyn’s metal scene in 1990, founded by the towering vocalist and bassist Peter Steele, who reinvented his previous thrash band Carnivore into a groundbreaking gothic metal act. The original lineup featured guitarist Ken Hickey, keyboardist Josh Silver, and initially drummer Sal Abruscato, who was soon replaced by Johnny Kelly. Known for pioneering a slow, doom-infused sound, Type O Negative combined heavy distortion with atmospheric moods, dark humor, and themes of misanthropy, depression, and vampiric imagery.

Their debut album, "Slow, Deep and Hard" (1991), introduced fans to sprawling, melancholic compositions such as "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity," establishing their signature brooding vibe. The follow-up, a controversial faux live album titled "The Origin of the Feces" (1992), maintained their grim yet satirical tone. Type O Negative’s commercial breakthrough came with "Bloody Kisses" (1993), where Beatles-inspired melodies met gothic metal sensibilities, propelled by the hit "Black No. 1" and extensive touring that landed them on the Billboard Top 200.

The band’s evolving sound was evident on "October Rust" (1996), which embraced more accessible, melodic elements, while later albums like "World Coming Down" (1999) and "Life Is Killing Me" (2003) revisited darker, heavier atmospheres. Their final studio effort, "Dead Again" (2007), showcased mature reflections on mortality before the band’s journey ended with Steele’s untimely death in 2010. With their unique blend of humor, melancholy, and gothic metal, Type O Negative left an indelible mark on the metal genre that continues to influence artists worldwide.
