About Gotye

Gotye, born Wouter De Backer on May 21, 1980, in Bruges, Belgium, is a renowned songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist celebrated for his unique blend of electronic music and indie rock. Moving to Australia at the age of two, he grew up in Melbourne’s Montmorency suburb, where he honed his skills in keyboards and drums during his teenage years. Gotye’s musical journey began with his high school band Downstares and later evolved into a solo career under a moniker derived from the French equivalent of his name, Gaultier.

His early work gained traction with the 2001 EP "Out Here in the Cold," catching the attention of Australia’s influential radio station Triple J. This momentum led to his debut album "Boardface" (2003) and the critically acclaimed "Like Drawing Blood" (2006), which achieved platinum status in Australia and was named album of the year by Triple J listeners. Gotye’s international breakthrough arrived with his third album, "Making Mirrors" (2011), propelled by the global hit "Somebody That I Used to Know," a haunting duet with New Zealand singer Kimbra. The track topped charts worldwide and earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Best Alternative Album.

Beyond his solo achievements, Gotye has remained active in the band the Basics and launched the Ondioline Orchestra project, paying homage to electronic pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey. In 2017, he founded the Forgotten Futures label to preserve rare electronic recordings, underscoring his dedication to musical innovation. Gotye’s enduring impact lies in his ability to seamlessly fuse diverse sounds, securing his status as a versatile and influential figure in contemporary music.
