About Animal Collective

Animal Collective is an experimental music group that originated in Baltimore County, Maryland, in the mid-1990s. Formed by childhood friends David Portner (Avey Tare), Noah Lennox (Panda Bear), Brian Weitz (Geologist), and Josh Dibb (Deakin), the band began by experimenting with covers and effects pedals before crafting their own innovative sound. After moving to New York City for college, they immersed themselves in the local experimental and art-rock scenes, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of influences, including Pavement, Pink Floyd, Krautrock, minimal techno, and avant-garde composers.

Animal Collective’s early recordings started as a duo, with their debut album "Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" (2000), and evolved as the full lineup adopted the name officially on "Here Comes the Indian" (2003). Their reputation soared with the release of "Sung Tongs" (2004), a critically acclaimed freak-folk album featuring delicate acoustic harmonies and intricate songwriting. Following this, they released "Feels" (2005) and "Strawberry Jam" (2007), each showcasing their growing psychedelic and melodic sensibilities.

Panda Bear’s solo work, notably "Person Pitch" (2007), significantly influenced the band’s direction. Animal Collective achieved widespread commercial success with "Merriweather Post Pavilion" (2009), an album that fused electronic textures with accessible melodies and broke into the Top 20 on U.S. charts. Later projects like the visual album "Oddsac" (2010), "Painting With" (2016), "Tangerine Reef" (2018), and "Time Skiffs" (2022)—which reunited the full quartet—highlight their continual innovation. Their most expansive studio effort to date, "Isn’t It Now?" (2023), reflects a collaborative, in-person recording process, affirming Animal Collective’s position as pioneers in psychedelic, experimental, and indie music.
