About John Maus

John Maus is an American experimental musician, singer-songwriter, and philosopher renowned for his distinctive lo-fi synth-pop sound infused with introspective and often enigmatic lyrics. Emerging in the early 2000s, Maus gained initial recognition as a keyboardist collaborating with avant-garde groups such as Animal Collective, Panda Bear, and Haunted Graffiti. Drawing inspiration from iconic figures like David Bowie, Scott Walker, and Joy Division, he developed a uniquely hermetic style that blends avant-pop with experimental and synth-based elements.

Maus released his debut album, "Songs" (2006), which, despite facing harsh critical dismissal due to its unconventional vocals and raw production, revealed his commitment to forging his artistic path. He followed up with "Love Is Real" (2007), further honing his dark, evocative sound. His academic pursuit culminated in a doctorate in political philosophy, an endeavor that deeply informed his musical approach. This intellectual rigor is evident in his breakthrough album, "We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves" (2011), widely regarded as his most dynamic and compelling work.

Continuing to innovate, Maus employed custom-built modular synthesizers to craft "Screen Memories" (2017), a complex exploration of memory and emotion, followed by its companion piece "Addendum" (2018). His 2012 compilation, "A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material," offers a glimpse into over a decade of his prolific output. John Maus remains a singular figure in the underground music scene, artfully merging philosophical depth with haunting melodies, pushing the boundaries of traditional synth-pop and experimental music.
