About Jacintha

Jacintha Abisheganaden, widely known simply as Jacintha, is a distinguished Singaporean jazz and torch singer born on October 3, 1957. Raised in a musically vibrant family—her mother a Chinese singer and pianist, and her father, Alexander Abisheganaden, a classically trained and jazz guitarist of Sri Lankan descent—she developed an early appreciation for diverse musical styles. Influenced by legendary vocalists like Julie London, Shirley Horn, and Brazilian icon Astrud Gilberto, as well as artists such as Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, and Sergio Mendes, Jacintha blends smooth jazz with bossa nova and cinematic elements, crafting an accessible yet sophisticated sound.

After earning an English degree from the National University of Singapore and performing with the Singapore Youth Choir in the 1970s, Jacintha emerged as a prominent figure in the Asia-Pacific music scene throughout the 1980s. She released notable albums including "Jacintha" (1983), "Tropicana" (1987), and "Dramarama" (1991), establishing her artistic identity as both a recording artist and stage actress.

Jacintha’s international breakthrough came in the late 1990s when she collaborated with producer Ying Tan and signed with the Los Angeles-based Groove Note label. This partnership produced acclaimed works such as "Here’s to Ben: A Vocal Tribute to Ben Webster" (1999), "Autumn Leaves: The Songs of Johnny Mercer" (1999), "Lush Life" (2001), "Jacintha Is Her Name" (2003), "The Girl from Bossa Nova" (2004), and "Jacintha Goes to Hollywood" (2007). These albums showcase her unique ability to interpret jazz standards and Brazilian rhythms with warmth and clarity, solidifying her reputation as a refined vocalist with enduring international appeal.
