About Dele Sosimi

Dele Sosimi is a British-Nigerian musician renowned for his exceptional role in advancing Afrobeat, blending its traditional rhythms with elements of jazz, funk, and highlife. Born in London and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, he honed his skills studying piano and music theory at the Musical Society of Nigeria. In 1979, Sosimi joined Fela Kuti’s iconic Egypt 80 band as keyboardist and musical director, a position he held for over a decade. His deep involvement in shaping the Afrobeat sound during this period cemented his status as one of the genre’s foremost keyboard virtuosos.

Following Fela Kuti’s passing, Sosimi collaborated with Femi Kuti and his Positive Force band before launching his own project, the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra, in the late 1990s. His solo albums, including "Turbulent Times" (2009), "You No Fit Touch Am," and "Identity" (2017), showcase his masterful fusion of Afrobeat with contemporary jazz improvisation and socially conscious lyrics. Known for his dynamic live performances and innovative arrangements, Dele Sosimi continues to captivate audiences worldwide, preserving and evolving the rich cultural and political spirit of Afrobeat. Through decades of dedication, he remains a vital ambassador for the genre, inspiring new generations while honoring its revolutionary roots.
