About Explosions in the Sky

Explosions in the Sky is a Texas-based instrumental rock quartet formed in 1999 in Austin. Consisting of Mark Smith and Munaf Rayani on guitars, Michael James on bass, and Christopher Hrasky on drums, the band has become a defining force in cinematic post-rock. Known for their emotionally charged compositions, they craft sweeping soundscapes that build from delicate melodies to powerful, crescendo-driven climaxes, earning comparisons to contemporaries like Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor while cultivating a unique voice.

Their breakthrough came with the self-released 2000 demo "How Strange, Innocence," which caught the attention of Temporary Residence Limited, leading to their acclaimed 2001 album "Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever." Explosions in the Sky solidified their reputation with the contemplative "The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place" (2003) and continued success with "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone" (2007), which marked their first entry on the Billboard Top 200.

Beyond studio albums, the band expanded into film scoring, most notably for the Texas-set drama "Friday Night Lights" (2004), and later worked with David Wingo on "Prince Avalanche" (2013). Their 2011 release "Take Care, Take Care, Take Care" reached the Billboard Top 20, highlighting their growth from underground favorites to recognized pioneers. Recent works, including "The Wilderness" (2016) and 2023’s "End," showcase a blend of expansive guitar interplay and electronic experimentation. The band also composed the soundtrack for the 2021 PBS documentary "Big Bend," underscoring their enduring connection to their Texas roots and continual evolution within the post-rock genre.
