About Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke, born January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, is celebrated as a pioneering architect of soul music whose influence remains unparalleled. Raised in a religious household, Cooke honed his remarkable vocal skills singing in his Baptist minister father’s church before joining the famed gospel group the Soul Stirrers in 1950. His powerful performances, including the revered "Touch the Hem of His Garment," established him as a gospel sensation.

Cooke’s groundbreaking transition to secular music began in 1956 under the alias Dale Cooke, but true stardom arrived with his 1957 smash hit "You Send Me," which topped both pop and R&B charts and sold over two million copies. This song helped define the soul genre by artfully blending gospel’s emotional depth with rhythm and blues and pop sensibilities. During his early years with Keen Records, hits like "Only Sixteen" and "(What A) Wonderful World" solidified his popularity.

After joining RCA Records in 1960, Cooke expanded his artistic range with classics such as "Chain Gang," "Cupid," and "Twistin' the Night Away." Beyond his vocal talent, Cooke was a savvy entrepreneur, founding SAR Records and Kags Music publishing to maintain control in an industry that often marginalized black artists. His 1964 anthem "A Change Is Gonna Come," inspired by the civil rights movement and Bob Dylan’s work, became a timeless symbol of hope and social change.

Tragically, Sam Cooke’s life was cut short in December 1964 at a Los Angeles motel under controversial circumstances. Despite his early death, his enduring legacy shaped the course of American music and influenced generations of artists across genres.
