About Lipps, Inc.

Lipps, Inc. emerged from Minneapolis in the late 1970s as a pioneering disco project led by multi-instrumentalist and producer Steven Greenberg. The band’s name cleverly plays on the term “lip sync,” reflecting Greenberg’s innovative approach to music production. Lipps, Inc. is best remembered for their iconic 1980 hit "Funkytown," a sleek, computerized track with minimalist arrangements that stood out amid disco's typically lavish soundscapes. The song captured the era’s longing for escape and dominated the charts for four consecutive weeks, cementing its status as one of disco’s most enduring classics.

Greenberg initially gained the attention of Casablanca Records with the local success of "Rock It," which paved the way for Lipps, Inc.'s debut album, *Mouth Music* (1980). The album featured the dynamic vocals of Cynthia Johnson, a former Miss Black Minnesota who had also performed with an early version of The Time. Alongside session musicians like guitarists David Rivkin and Tom Riopelle, the group turned Minneapolis from a musical backwater into a notable hub.

Following *Mouth Music*, Lipps, Inc. released the *Pucker Up* EP and albums such as *Designer Music* and *4*, including notable tracks like a club hit cover of Ace’s "How Long." However, none matched the success of "Funkytown." Cynthia Johnson gradually departed by 1983, succeeded by Melanie Rosales. Although Lipps, Inc. disbanded by 1985, their influence remains significant, helping to lay the groundwork for Minneapolis’ flourishing music scene in the 1980s. Afterward, Greenberg shifted careers, finding success in web design while the band’s legacy endures in disco history.
