About Richie Hawtin

Richie Hawtin, born in Oxfordshire, England in 1970, is a pioneering force in the world of minimal techno and electronic music. Moving to Windsor, Ontario, at age nine, Hawtin found himself at the doorstep of Detroit’s vibrant techno scene, which profoundly shaped his artistic direction. Drawing inspiration from European synth-pop legends like Kraftwerk and New Order, alongside Detroit innovators such as Juan Atkins and Derrick May, he began DJing in the late 1980s, quickly establishing himself as an innovative producer.

Hawtin gained international acclaim under his Plastikman alias, releasing seminal works including "Sheet One" (1993), "Musik" (1994), and the ambient centerpiece "Consumed" (1998). The track "Spastik" became an iconic minimal techno anthem, solidifying his reputation for crafting experimental and introspective soundscapes. Alongside John Acquaviva, he co-founded the influential Plus 8 label before launching Minus in Berlin in 1998—a city that would become central to his evolving sound.

Known for revolutionizing DJ performance, Hawtin’s groundbreaking mix albums, especially "Decks, EFX & 909" (1999), showcase his mastery of integrating cutting-edge technology with traditional techniques. His commitment to innovation extends far beyond clubs, highlighted by conceptual projects such as his 2013 Guggenheim Museum performance, which led to the album "EX" (2014). Endlessly pushing boundaries, Richie Hawtin remains a visionary artist and tastemaker whose work continues to redefine electronic music culture worldwide.
