About Primus

Primus, formed in 1984 in San Francisco, stands as one of the most distinctive and innovative bands in alternative rock history. Anchored by bassist and vocalist Les Claypool, their sound is a genre-defying fusion of alternative metal, funk rock, and post-punk, marked by Claypool’s signature slap bass technique and quirky vocal style. Guitarist Larry LaLonde adds inventive riffs, while the drums—initially played by Tim "Herb" Alexander and later by Brian "Brain" Mantia and Jay Lane—provide complex rhythms that blend avant-garde noise with musical precision.

Emerging from San Francisco’s underground scene, Primus gradually built a dedicated following through their eccentric yet accessible compositions. Their breakthrough arrived with the 1991 album "Sailing the Seas of Cheese," which achieved gold status and introduced hits that showcased their unique sound. This success was followed by "Pork Soda" (1993), their first album to chart in the Top Ten, and "Tales from the Punchbowl" (1995), which also earned gold certification. Primus’s music is often compared to the intricate complexities of Rush and the absurd humor of Frank Zappa, setting them apart from typical funk-rock bands.

Throughout their career, Primus collaborated with notable artists like Tom Morello and James Hetfield, especially on albums like "Antipop" (1999). After a hiatus beginning in 2000, the band reunited in 2003 and continued delivering innovative projects such as "Green Naugahyde" (2011). They later explored imaginative themes with "Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble" (2014) and the literary-inspired "The Desaturating Seven" (2017), cementing their legacy as pioneers of avant-garde, skillful, and genre-blending rock music.
