About Emilíana Torrini

Emilíana Torrini is a celebrated Icelandic singer-songwriter renowned for her unique fusion of folk, electronica, pop-rock, and trip-hop, crafting a sound often likened to Björk, Beth Hirsch, and Kirsty Hawkshaw. Raised in Kópavogur, Emilíana balanced working at her father’s Italian restaurant with rigorous opera training during her teenage years, laying a foundation for her ethereal vocal style.

Her early career saw the release of three Icelandic albums—*Spoon*, *Crouçie D'où Là*, and *Merman*—which built her local reputation. Emilíana’s international breakthrough came with the 1999 album *Love in the Time of Science*, produced in collaboration with Tears for Fears’ Roland Orzabal. This project highlighted her haunting voice and broadened her appeal. In 2002, filmmaker Peter Jackson personally selected her to perform the closing song for *The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers*, a prestigious role initially offered to Björk.

Emilíana further expanded her influence by co-writing hits for Kylie Minogue, including the chart-topping single "Slow." Her 2005 album *Fisherman’s Woman* presented a stripped-back, acoustic sound emphasizing her angelic vocals. Partnering with producer Dan Carey, she released *Me and Armini* (2008), featuring the European hit "Jungle Drum," which topped charts in Iceland, Germany, and Belgium. Exploring new electronic textures on *Tookah* (2013), Emilíana embraced synthesizers like Oberheim and the Swarmatron, signaling her evolving artistry.

Continuing her collaborative spirit, Emilíana teamed up with Belgium's Colorist Orchestra for live reimaginings of her songs, resulting in *The Colorist & Emilíana Torrini* (2016). She also contributed to Canadian turntablist Kid Koala’s *Music to Draw To: Satellite* (2017), showcasing her ongoing versatility and international appeal. Emilíana Torrini remains a dynamic figure whose timeless voice and genre-blending style continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
