About Ray LaMontagne

Ray LaMontagne, born Raymond Charles Jack LaMontagne in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1973, is a distinguished American singer-songwriter celebrated for his husky, sandpaper-like voice that draws comparisons to Van Morrison and Tim Buckley. His unexpected musical journey began while working in a Maine shoe factory, where hearing Stephen Stills' "Tree Top Flyer" ignited his passion to pursue music professionally.

LaMontagne rose to prominence with his 2004 debut album "Trouble," which introduced his intimate, folk-inspired storytelling and soulful vocals. Produced by Ethan Johns, the record featured standout tracks like "Trouble" and "Narrow Escape," garnering both critical acclaim and a growing fan base. He continued to evolve artistically with albums such as "Till the Sun Turns Black" (2006) and "Gossip in the Grain" (2008), the latter solidifying his presence through song placements on popular television series.

In 2012, LaMontagne took greater creative control, self-producing "God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise" with his band the Pariah Dogs. The album earned him a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and marked a milestone in his career. Collaborating with Dan Auerbach, he embraced a broader sound on 2014's "Supernova," which reached number three on the Billboard 200 and topped the Rock Albums chart. Subsequent releases like the psychedelic-infused "Ouroboros" (2016), created with Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and the Americana-tinged "Part of the Light" (2018), showcased his continual artistic growth.

During the 2020 pandemic, LaMontagne demonstrated his multi-instrumental talents by fully self-recording "Monovision," further proving his versatility. His recent works include the Motown-inspired single "Step Into Your Power" (2024) and the upcoming ninth studio album "Long Way Home." With a career spanning over two decades, Ray LaMontagne remains a vital force in contemporary folk and rock music, known for his evocative songwriting and distinctive voice that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide.
