About Isis

Isis, a Boston-based quintet formed in 1997 by Hydra Head Records owner Aaron Turner, stands as a seminal force in experimental heavy music. Alongside bassist Jeff Caxide and drummer Aaron Harris, the band blended crushing metal riffs with atmospheric soundscapes, drawing inspiration from pioneers like Earth, the Melvins, Godflesh, and longtime allies Neurosis. Their lineup later expanded to include guitarist Mike Gallagher and keyboardist Cliff Meyer, enriching their sonic palette.

Isis’s early releases, including the *The Mosquito Control* EP (1998) and *The Red Sea* EP (1999), laid the groundwork for their evolving sound—a fusion of brutal intensity and haunting ambiance. The 2000 album *Celestial* marked a turning point, introducing melodic warmth without sacrificing heaviness. Their breakthrough came with *Oceanic* (2002), an album that received widespread acclaim and solidified Isis’s reputation as innovators of post-metal. Subsequent releases like *Panopticon* (2004) pushed boundaries further, while collaborations—such as the *In the Fishtank* project with Aereogramme and a split EP with the Melvins—highlighted their collaborative spirit.

Their final studio album, *Wavering Radiant* (2009), featured contributions from Tool’s guitarist Adam Jones, underscoring their respected status in the heavy music community. After an influential career marked by extensive tours with acts like Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Tool, Isis announced their split in 2010, culminating in a farewell show in Montreal. The posthumous *Temporal* compilation (2012) cemented their legacy as visionary architects who seamlessly merged heaviness with ambient textures, continuing to inspire experimental metal artists worldwide.
