About Dave Valentin

Dave Valentin was a trailblazing American jazz flutist born in 1952 in the Bronx, renowned for seamlessly fusing Latin jazz with pop, R&B, and Brazilian musical influences. His musical journey began early, playing percussion instruments such as bongos and congas by age nine, performing in Latin clubs by twelve. At eighteen, Valentin shifted his focus to the flute under the mentorship of the acclaimed flutist Hubert Laws, who recognized and encouraged his distinctive sound on the instrument.

Valentin's professional career took off in 1977 with recordings alongside Ricardo Marrero and violinist Noel Pointer. His breakthrough came when industry icons Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen discovered him, signing him as the first artist on their influential GRP Records label. Over his tenure at GRP, Valentin released more than fifteen albums, establishing himself as a leading figure in contemporary Latin jazz fusion and smooth jazz circles. His music was celebrated for its vibrant rhythms and accessible yet sophisticated crossover appeal.

Later in his career, Valentin continued to innovate with HighNote Records, producing notable albums including "World on a String" (2005), "Come Fly with Me" (2006), and "Pure Imagination" (2011). Despite suffering debilitating strokes in 2012 and 2015, he remained a beloved figure until his passing in 2017 at age 64, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a dynamic force in jazz and Latin music fusion.
