About The Doobie Brothers

The Doobie Brothers rank among California’s most iconic pop-rock bands of the 1970s, known for their seamless evolution from a laid-back, post-hippie boogie group into a polished, soul-infused ensemble. Formed in 1970 by Tom Johnston and John Hartman, alongside Dave Shogren and Patrick Simmons, the band emerged from the brief country-rock project Pud. They adopted the name "The Doobie Brothers," a nod to marijuana slang, and quickly caught the attention of Warner Bros. Records.

Their breakthrough came with the 1972 album *Toulouse Street*, featuring enduring hits like "Listen to the Music" and "Jesus Is Just Alright." The follow-up, *The Captain and Me* (1973), solidified their success with Top Ten singles "Long Train Runnin’" and "China Grove." In 1974, after drummer Michael Hossack was replaced by Keith Knudsen, the band released *What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits*, which included their first No.1 single, "Black Water."

A significant shift occurred when Steely Dan alumni Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and Michael McDonald joined, bringing a jazzier, funkier sound. This new direction shone on *Takin’ It to the Streets* (1976) and peaked with the 1978 album *Minute by Minute*, featuring the Grammy-winning hit "What a Fool Believes." After disbanding briefly in 1982, The Doobie Brothers reunited in the late 1980s, releasing *Cycles* (1989) with the Top Ten track "The Doctor." They continued to tour and record into the 2000s, with albums like *Sibling Rivalry* (2000) and *World Gone Crazy* (2010).

In 2014, The Doobie Brothers revisited their roots on *Southbound*, collaborating with Nashville stars such as Toby Keith and Brad Paisley, reaffirming their enduring legacy as pioneers of rock and pop music.
