About Charley Pride

Charley Pride was a trailblazing African-American country music singer whose rich baritone and heartfelt storytelling earned him legendary status from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s. Born in 1934 on a cotton farm in Sledge, Mississippi, where his father worked as a sharecropper, Pride initially pursued a professional baseball career. He played for the Memphis Red Sox in the Negro American League and served in the U.S. Army before injuries and unsuccessful tryouts with major league teams shifted his focus to music.

Encouraged by country icons Red Foley and Red Sovine, Pride moved to Nashville in the early 1960s and signed with RCA Records in 1966. His debut single, "The Snakes Crawl at Night," introduced him to country audiences, but it was the Top Ten hit "Just Between You and Me" (1966) that launched his extraordinary career. Between 1966 and 1983, Charley Pride scored 36 number-one singles, including enduring classics like "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’" (1971), "All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)," and "I'm Just Me." His traditional country-pop sound won over fans across racial lines, making him RCA’s second-best-selling artist after Elvis Presley during his peak.

Pride broke historic racial barriers by becoming the first Black artist to perform on the Grand Ole Opry since the 1920s, winning multiple Grammy Awards including Best Gospel Performance. Though the industry’s landscape changed in the 1980s, he continued to record and tour for decades, earning accolades such as the Academy of Country Music’s Pioneer Award and the Country Music Association’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award shortly before his passing in 2020 from COVID-19 complications. Charley Pride’s legacy remains a powerful testament to talent and trailblazing spirit in country music history.
