About Nena

Nena Kerner, professionally known as Nena, rose to fame as one of Germany’s most iconic pop stars in the early 1980s. Originally performing with the short-lived band the Stripes, she soon formed the band Nena in Berlin alongside Carlo Karges, Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, Jürgen Dehmel, and Rolf Brendel. Their breakthrough came with the hit single "Nur Geträumt" (1982), which topped charts in German-speaking countries following a televised debut on Musikladen. However, it was the 1984 release of "99 Luftballons" that propelled Nena to international stardom, uniquely breaking language barriers by reaching U.S. charts and becoming a global sensation.

Despite this early success, the group’s popularity declined by the mid-1980s, leading to their split in 1987. Nena pursued a solo career starting in 1989, showcasing versatility by blending melodic vocals with rock influences—from Beatles-inspired sounds to punk elements reminiscent of the Ramones. Throughout the 1990s, she expanded her creative scope by hosting the TV variety show *Metro* and producing children’s albums and animated film soundtracks.

After a lukewarm reception to her electronic-leaning album *Chokmah* (2001), Nena experienced a notable comeback with the live compilation *Feat. Nena: Live* (2002) and the platinum-selling *Willst Du Mit Mir Gehn* (2005), which featured a heavier rock sound. Subsequent releases like *Cover Me* (2007), *Made in Germany* (2009), and *Oldschool* (2015) solidified her enduring appeal across generations. Today, Nena remains a dynamic figure in pop music, skillfully integrating new wave, punk, and electronic influences into her evolving sound.
