About Riverside

Riverside is a Pennsylvania-based alternative rock band formed in the early 1990s, notable for their distinct British-influenced jangle pop sound. The lineup featured brothers Keith Kochanowicz (vocals, guitar, organ) and Glenn Kochanowicz (bass, vocals), alongside Kenneth Jackson (guitar) and Geoff Verne (drums). Drawing heavily from mid-1980s indie acts like the Smiths and the Railway Children, Riverside crafted dreamy melodies enriched with ringing guitars that reflected their Anglophilic musical passion.

Their debut album, "One" (1992), produced by Steve Lau of Ocean Blue fame and released through Sire Records, highlighted their polished, atmospheric style. Despite critical appreciation and their single "Waterfall" gaining brief exposure on MTV’s 120 Minutes, Riverside struggled to break through amid the rising grunge movement led by Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Their music, characterized by jangly guitars and melodic subtlety, seemed out of step with the heavier alternative rock trends dominating the era.

Riverside recorded a follow-up album titled "Taste," but after being dropped by Sire Records, the album was shelved, with only limited cassette copies later distributed independently by Glenn Kochanowicz. Eventually, the Kochanowicz brothers placed Riverside on hiatus, shifting creative focus to their subsequent project, Deluxe. Though overlooked commercially, Riverside’s body of work remains a compelling testament to their commitment to a nuanced and bittersweet chapter of 1990s alternative music.
