About Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra

Since its establishment in 1949, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) has emerged as one of the world’s most distinguished orchestral ensembles. Based in Munich, the orchestra has built a prestigious reputation through its captivating performances and extensive tours across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The BRSO’s artistic legacy is deeply shaped by its legendary chief conductors, including Eugen Jochum (1949–1960), Rafael Kubelík (1961–1979), Sir Colin Davis (1983–1992), Lorin Maazel (1993–2002), and Mariss Jansons (2003–2019). Under Jansons' visionary leadership, the orchestra significantly expanded its acclaimed discography, winning a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Orchestral Performance with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 ("Babij Jar").

Widely recognized for its mastery, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra was ranked among the world’s top ten orchestras by Gramophone in 2008. More recent highlights include their recording of Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, which earned top honors from the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik and was named BBC Music Magazine’s CD of the Month in 2020. The album "Mariss Jansons – His Last Concert" also received the esteemed Choc de Classica award in 2021. Looking ahead, Sir Simon Rattle took the baton as chief conductor starting in the 2023/2024 season, embarking on a new chapter that promises to continue the BRSO’s tradition of artistic excellence and international acclaim.
