About Brighde Chaimbeul

Brìghde Chaimbeul, born in 1999 and raised in Sleat on the Isle of Skye, is hailed as one of the most gifted Scottish pipers of her generation and a pioneering figure for women in the historically male-dominated piping tradition. Growing up in a native Gaelic-speaking family steeped in music, she began her musical journey with piano and fiddle before embracing the pipes at age seven, inspired by trailblazer Rona Lightfoot. Under the mentorship of Niall Stewart, Chaimbeul won her first piping competition by the age of ten, showcasing prodigious talent early on.

Her artistic identity took shape in 2014 when she adopted the Scottish smallpipes, whose bright, sweet tones distinguish her sound. Chaimbeul gained widespread recognition by winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2016, followed by a nomination for “Up and Coming” at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2017. She frequently performs with guitarist Innes White and her sister Mairi on clarsach, and collaborates closely with acclaimed piper Ross Ainslie.

A Saltire Society bursary enabled Chaimbeul to study Bulgarian piping traditions, expanding her style with influences from Bulgarian, Scandinavian, and Cape Breton music. Rather than composing new pieces, she dedicates herself to reviving ancient and forgotten tunes. Her debut album, "The Reeling" (2019), released on River Lea Records, features notable collaborators such as Lau’s fiddler Aidan O’Rourke and Lankum’s Radie Peat on concertina. Recorded in the historic East Church, Cromarty, the album melds experimental textures with earthy, raw soundscapes, cementing Brìghde Chaimbeul’s innovative role in contemporary Scottish folk music.
