About Belle and Sebastian

Belle and Sebastian, the acclaimed indie pop band from Glasgow, originated in 1994 from an unlikely government-funded project supporting unemployed musicians. Founded by Stuart Murdoch during his battle with chronic fatigue syndrome, the group initially formed to capture Murdoch’s introspective songwriting. What began as a temporary collaboration of seven college students—including Sarah Martin, Stevie Jackson, Chris Geddes, Stuart David, Richard Colburn, and Isobel Campbell—quickly blossomed into one of indie pop’s most treasured acts.

Their debut album, *Tigermilk* (1996), was recorded in just three days with a modest budget and initially released in a limited vinyl run of 1,000 copies. This low-fi, chamber pop collection infused with ‘60s influences and twee charm resonated far beyond expectations, sparking widespread acclaim. The band solidified their cult status with the follow-up *If You’re Feeling Sinister* (1996), a lauded masterpiece that remains central to their identity. Through the late ’90s, albums such as *The Boy with the Arab Strap* (1998) and *Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant* (2000) showcased their evolving sound and expanding lineup.

After transitioning from Jeepster to Rough Trade Records, Belle and Sebastian achieved notable commercial success with *Dear Catastrophe Waitress* (2003), produced by Trevor Horn, which delivered their highest-charting UK single, “I’m a Cuckoo.” Subsequent releases like *The Life Pursuit* (2006) and *Write About Love* (2010) maintained their critical acclaim, while *Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance* (2015) explored new stylistic directions. Following a pandemic hiatus, the band returned with *A Bit of Previous* (2022) and *Late Developers* (2023), reaffirming their enduring influence nearly three decades on. With their rich instrumentation and intimate storytelling, Belle and Sebastian continue to captivate indie music audiences worldwide.
