About Levi Roots

Keith Valentine Graham, better known as Levi Roots, was born in 1958 in Clarendon, Jamaica, and relocated to the UK at the age of 12. Immersing himself in Britain’s vibrant reggae scene, he became a pivotal figure in England’s Roots and Culture movement. Levi Roots began his musical journey with the iconic Sir Coxsone’s Outernational Sound System, carving out a reputation as a skilled DJ and recording artist.

His debut single, "Poor Man Story" (1990s), produced by Lloyd Coxsone and mixed by Dennis Bovell, quickly became an anthem within the reggae community, prized by collectors and later adapted by others for broader chart success. In the early 1980s, Levi Roots founded the band Matic 16, releasing the much-celebrated single "Jahoviah" on Jimmy Lindsay’s Music Hive label—a track that gained heavy rotation on Jah Shaka’s sound system. Throughout this period, Matic 16 supported Jamaican reggae legends like Sugar Minott, Junior Reid, and Half Pint.

Levi Roots also launched the Conqueror label, which helped foster emerging talents such as Jack Radics and Mikey General. After Matic 16 disbanded in 1985, he pursued solo projects, recording with prominent producers including Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell and the legendary duo Sly and Robbie. This era yielded notable tracks like "It A Fi Burn" and "Sweet Africa."

In 1996, Levi Roots reunited with the Tenyue brothers to produce the critically acclaimed album "Free Your Mind," featuring top reggae musicians such as Mafia and Fluxy and contributions from Jah Shaka. Beyond music, his creative talents extended to literature with the novel "Dreadlock Holiday," inspired by his own life experiences. Levi Roots remains a highly respected and influential figure, bridging Jamaican roots reggae with British culture while nurturing new artists across decades.
