About Agalloch

Emerging from Portland, Oregon in 1995, Agalloch quickly established themselves as pioneers in atmospheric extreme metal by blending black metal’s raw intensity with elements of gothic doom, neo-folk, and post-rock. Founded by guitarist and vocalist John Haughm alongside keyboardist Shane Breyer, the band evolved into a quartet with guitar work from Don Anderson and bass by Jason William Walton. Their early demos, including "From Which of This Oak" (1996) and "Promo 1998," secured a deal with The End Records, leading to their groundbreaking debut album "Pale Folklore" (1999). This record marked a departure from traditional black metal through its incorporation of neoclassical and folk influences, icy atmospheres, and ethereal vocals, instantly carving a devoted cult following.

Following Breyer’s departure, Agalloch refined their sound, delivering the critically acclaimed "The Mantle" (2002), which emphasized expansive post-rock textures and deepened their atmospheric approach. Subsequent releases such as "Ashes Against the Grain" (2006) and the analog-recorded "Marrow of the Spirit" (2010) on Profound Lore Records showcased the band’s shift toward a rawer, more organic intensity. Their final studio album, "The Serpent & the Sphere" (2014), received universal praise for its sophisticated blend of blackened progressive folk metal and rich sonic detail. Agalloch officially disbanded in 2016, but their legacy as innovators who blurred genre boundaries continues to influence and captivate atmospheric metal fans worldwide.
