About Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus, born Steven Ellison in 1983 in Los Angeles, is a pioneering force in modern music, renowned for his innovative fusion of hip-hop, experimental electronic sounds, and avant-garde jazz. Coming from a rich musical legacy—as the grand-nephew of jazz icons Alice and John Coltrane, and grandson of songwriter Marilyn McLeod—Ellison’s artistry is deeply rooted in jazz tradition while pushing sonic boundaries. After studying at the Los Angeles Film School and gaining early experience at Stones Throw Records, he emerged onto the scene in 2006 with his debut album "1983" on Plug Research, quickly becoming a central figure in L.A.’s vibrant beat movement.

His breakthrough arrived with the critically acclaimed 2008 album "Los Angeles" on Warp Records, which showcased his unique blend of programmed beats and live instrumentation, drawing on West Coast rap influences and solidifying his distinctive voice beyond comparisons to producers like J Dilla and Madlib. Throughout his career, Flying Lotus has collaborated extensively with key artists such as bassist Thundercat and strings arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, shaping albums like "Cosmogramma" (2010) and "Until the Quiet Comes" (2012). His 2014 release "You're Dead!" marked a significant milestone, featuring the Grammy-nominated track "Never Catch Me" with Kendrick Lamar and breaking into the Billboard 200 Top 20.

Beyond his albums, Ellison founded the influential Brainfeeder label to champion avant-garde talents and expanded into film and anime scoring, including work on the 2021 Netflix series "Yasuke." His 2019 album "Flamagra" continued blending genres, enlisting collaborators like Solange, Anderson .Paak, and George Clinton, and topped Billboard’s Dance/Electronic charts. In 2024, he released "Garmonbozia," inspired by David Lynch, reaffirming Flying Lotus’s reputation as a visionary artist continually redefining the boundaries of contemporary music.
