About Boris

Boris is a trailblazing Japanese experimental rock trio formed in Tokyo in 1992. Named after a track from the Melvins’ *Bullhead* album, the band consists of guitarist Wata, bassist/vocalist Takeshi, and drummer/vocalist Atsuo, who took over dual vocal duties after original drummer Nagata left in 1996. Renowned for their adventurous fusion of doom and sludge metal with psychedelic rock, noise, minimalism, and drone, Boris has carved out a unique sonic identity defined by heavily downtuned instruments and sprawling, slow-paced compositions.

Their debut, *Absolutego* (1996), is a monumental 65-minute drone piece that set the tone for their boundary-pushing approach. This was followed by *Flood* (2000), an experimental exploration into minimalism and meditative soundscapes. Boris’s prolific discography includes critically acclaimed records like *Akuma No Uta* (2003), *Pink* (2005)—which significantly boosted their international profile through its U.S. release by Southern Lord—and the versatile *Heavy Rocks* and *Attention Please* (both 2011), the latter highlighting Wata's ethereal vocals.

Collaborations with avant-garde legends such as Keiji Haino, noise pioneer Merzbow, and drone metal icons Sunn O))) further showcase their experimental ethos. Albums like *Gensho* (2016) feature innovative dual-disc formats blending Boris’s intricate compositions with Merzbow’s intense noise textures. Despite occasional talks of disbanding, Boris reignited their creative drive with later works like *Dear* (2017) and *LφVE & EVφL* (2019), confirming their enduring influence across experimental, doom, and psychedelic rock scenes worldwide.
