About The James Taylor Quartet

The James Taylor Quartet (JTQ) is a seminal British band that emerged from the Medway Valley music scene in Kent after the 1986 split of the psychedelic-mod group the Prisoners. Founded by organist James Taylor, JTQ was born out of Taylor’s desire to explore jazz-inflected sounds rather than rock. The original lineup included Taylor’s brother David on guitar, former Prisoners bassist Alan Crockford, and drummer Simon Howard, blending talents from the local scene to create a fresh, groove-heavy style.

JTQ quickly gained attention through a BBC John Peel session that led to a record deal with the mod label Re-Elect the President. Their 1987 debut mini-album, "Mission Impossible," showcased their trademark takes on 1960s soundtrack instrumentals, inspired by icons like Jimmy Smith and Booker T. & the MG’s. The band’s sound evolved by incorporating elements of acid jazz, funk, and dance music, illustrated in the acclaimed 1988 remake "The Theme from Starsky and Hutch," which featured horn players who had worked with James Brown. Their 1989 single "Breakout" went further by introducing rap influences, while albums like "Do Your Own Thing" (1989) and "The Money Spyder" (1988) reinforced their reputation for blending jazz, rare groove, and dance beats.

JTQ’s dynamic live performances were captured on the 1991 album "Absolute." Despite lineup changes over the years, the group retained its Hammond organ-driven jazz-funk core, akin to the style of Jimmy McGriff. Their enduring impact was highlighted by James Taylor’s composition "Austin’s Theme," featured in the 1997 film "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery." Throughout their career, The James Taylor Quartet has remained a key force in the acid jazz movement, celebrated for their vibrant fusion of jazz, funk, and groove-based music.
