About Don Letts

Don Letts, born in Brixton, London, in 1956, is a pioneering artist whose multifaceted career spans music, filmmaking, and DJing. Of Jamaican descent, Letts played a crucial role in bridging the reggae and punk scenes during the late 1970s. As the manager of Acme Attractions, a Chelsea boutique popular among punk icons like the Clash and Sex Pistols, he became a cultural conduit between these worlds. His residency as DJ at The Roxy nightclub in Covent Garden saw Letts introduce dub reggae sets that significantly influenced the burgeoning London punk movement.

Letts captured the raw energy of this era through his Super-8 footage, culminating in the groundbreaking 1978 documentary "The Punk Rock Movie," which remains a vital chronicle of punk’s formative years. Over his career, he directed more than 300 music videos for renowned artists including the Pretenders and Elvis Costello. In 1984, Letts co-founded Big Audio Dynamite with former Clash guitarist Mick Jones, contributing vocals and samples across four albums. Their 1986 single "E=MC2" and the album "No. 10, Upping St." garnered notable acclaim, with the latter reaching number eleven on the UK charts.

Beyond music performance and filmmaking, Letts won a Grammy in 2000 for his documentary "The Clash: Westway to the World," solidifying his status as a masterful storyteller of music history. He also curated acclaimed reggae compilations such as "Dread Meets the Punk Rockers Uptown" (2002) and hosted the long-running "Culture Clash Radio" show on BBC 6 Music. His 2021 compilation "Version Excursion," released by Late Night Tales, underscores his enduring impact on music culture as a connector of diverse musical landscapes.
