About Starz

Starz emerged in the mid-1970s as a hard rock band known for blending melodic hooks with a powerful, arena-ready sound that drew comparisons to Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, and Kiss. The group was formed by guitarist Richie Ranno, guitarist Brendan Harkin, and vocalist Michael Lee Smith—brother of teen idol Rex Smith—alongside bassist Peter Sweval and drummer Jeff Grob (who performed under the stage name Joe X. Dube). Sweval and Grob brought experience from the 1970s pop group Looking Glass, famous for the 1972 chart-topping hit "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)."

Signed by Capitol Records, Starz released four studio albums between 1976 and 1979: their self-titled debut, "Violation" (1977), "Attention Shoppers!" (1978), and "Coliseum Rock" (1979). Despite delivering memorable tracks like "Detroit Girls," "Violation," "Cherry Baby," and "Sing It, Shout It," the band never achieved major commercial success. Their high-energy performances, featuring spectacular pyrotechnics, earned them opening slots for rock legends Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, and Rush. Richie Ranno’s collaboration on Gene Simmons’ 1978 solo album further connected them within the rock industry.

Though Starz disbanded in 1980, their influence lives on. They inspired future hair metal icons such as Poison, Cinderella, and Bon Jovi, securing a devoted cult following. The early 2000s revival of their work, with remastered album reissues and live recordings like "Live in Louisville" (1978), has reaffirmed Starz's legacy as unsung heroes of classic rock’s golden era.
