About Francesco De Gregori

Francesco De Gregori, born in Rome in 1951, is one of Italy’s most revered singer-songwriters, celebrated for his poetic and introspective lyrics. Drawing early inspiration from American icons like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, as well as Italian legend Fabrizio De André—who discovered and mentored him at a Roman studio—De Gregori carved a distinctive voice in Italian music. His career began with the 1972 collaborative debut *Theorius Campus* alongside Antonello Venditti, followed by solo albums *Alice Non Lo Sa* (1973) and *Francesco De Gregori* (1974), which met with modest critical reception.

De Gregori’s major breakthrough came with the 1975 album *Rimmel*, featuring collaborations with Lucio Dalla and highlighting his evolving, sophisticated songwriting. Despite the success of *Bufalo Bill* (1976), his momentum was briefly halted in 1977 when left-wing activists disrupted a Milan concert, prompting him to withdraw temporarily and work as a bookseller. Returning stronger, his 1978 self-titled album included the iconic anthem "Generale," reestablishing his place in Italian music.

Over the following decades, De Gregori solidified his legendary status with acclaimed releases like *Banana Republic* (1979), co-created during a tour with Dalla and Ron, *Titanic* (1982), and *Canzoni d’Amore* (1992). Nicknamed “Il Principe” for his reserved and enigmatic public persona, he continued to evolve with albums such as *Prendere e Lasciare* (1996), *Amore Nel Pomeriggio* (2001), and the rock-tinged *Pezzi* (2005). Collaborations with prominent artists including Pino Daniele, Fiorella Mannoia, and Giovanna Marini further cemented De Gregori’s enduring influence on Italian popular music.
