About The Notwist

Formed in Weilheim, Germany, in 1989, The Notwist began as a post-hardcore band deeply rooted in the American underground rock scene, drawing inspiration from acts like Dinosaur Jr. and Minor Threat. Founded by brothers Markus and Micha Acher alongside drummer Martin Messerschmid, their early sound was shaped by grunge and hardcore influences, evident in their self-titled debut (1990) and *Nook* (1992). A pivotal shift came in 1995 when electronic musician Martin Gretschmann joined, infusing the band’s music with electronic textures that would come to define their evolving style.

This fusion of indie rock, electronic, and jazz elements culminated in the critically acclaimed album "Neon Golden" (2002), which is widely recognized as a landmark in indie electronic music. The album blended heartfelt songwriting with live instrumentation and electronic programming, setting a new standard for the genre. The Notwist continued to push boundaries through subsequent releases such as "The Devil, You + Me" (2008), with its orchestral and cinematic influences, and the jazz-infused "Vertigo Days" (2021), featuring collaborations with artists like Juana Molina and Angel Bat Dawid.

Throughout their career, The Notwist has balanced experimental innovation with emotional depth, exploring genres from trip-hop and IDM to post-rock and jazz improvisation. Side projects like 13 & God and Spirit Fest reflect the band members’ wide-ranging creativity. Despite lineup changes, The Notwist remains a visionary force in contemporary independent music, earning lasting acclaim and a devoted global following.
