About Elvis Costello

Elvis Costello, born Declan McManus in 1954, stands as one of Britain’s most intellectually fierce and genre-defying singer-songwriters. The son of British bandleader Ross McManus, he began his musical journey performing folk music under the name D.P. Costello while working as a computer programmer. In 1976, he formed the country-rock group Flip City before his breakthrough came in 1977 with the demo recordings that caught the attention of Stiff Records’ Jake Riviera. Adopting the stage name Elvis Costello, he quickly rose to prominence with his debut album, "My Aim Is True" (1977), which featured enduring hits like "Alison" and "Less Than Zero."

Costello’s collaboration with the Attractions—bassist Bruce Thomas, keyboardist Steve Nieve, and drummer Pete Thomas—marked a pivotal evolution in his sound. Together, they released the harder-edged "This Year's Model" (1978) and the genre-blending "Armed Forces" (1979), producing classics such as "Oliver's Army," "Accidents Will Happen," and a notable cover of Nick Lowe’s "(What's So Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding."

Known for his relentless artistic reinvention, Costello expanded his stylistic palette throughout the 1980s, exploring soul on "Get Happy!!," rich orchestration on "Imperial Bedroom," and commercial appeal on "Punch the Clock." His extensive collaborations include legendary artists like Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach, Allen Toussaint, T-Bone Burnett, and the Roots, highlighting his versatility. Recent works such as "Spike" (1989), the Grammy-winning "Look Now" (2018), the innovative "Spanish Model" (2021)—a Latino-infused reinterpretation of "This Year's Model"—and 2022’s "The Boy Named If" affirm Elvis Costello’s enduring influence and creative vitality across five decades of music history.
