About Ozric Tentacles

Formed in 1983, Ozric Tentacles are a pioneering English band known for their seamless fusion of 1970s space rock with the organic dance and festival culture that gained prominence in the 1990s. Centered around visionary guitarist Ed Wynne, the group originally featured drummer Nick Van Gelder, keyboardist Joie Hinton, bassist Roly Wynne, and second guitarist Gavin Griffiths. Their early sound blended jazz fusion rhythms with psychedelic atmospherics, first showcased through six cassette-only albums beginning with "Erpsongs" (1984), which were later compiled in the Vitamin Enhanced box set.

Ozric Tentacles’ breakthrough came with the 1990 album "Erpland," which captured the spirit of the UK’s crusty movement and festival scene. This momentum continued with 1991’s "Strangeitude," their best-selling release that earned them a U.S. deal with Capitol Records. In 1993, their self-produced masterpiece "Jurassic Shift" climbed to number 11 on UK charts despite being released independently on their Dovetail label. Over the years, lineup changes and personal challenges—including the loss of bassist Roly Wynne in 1999 and the destruction of their Colorado studio—shaped their resilient journey.

Continuing to evolve, Ozric Tentacles crafted albums like "Waterfall Cities" (1999), "Spirals in Hyperspace" (2004), and "The Yumyum Tree" (2009), blending psychedelic, progressive, and electronic elements. Their ambitious double album "Technicians of the Sacred" (2016) marked a creative renaissance, followed by "Space for the Earth" (2020), reaffirming their status as masters of transcendent, instrumental cosmic rock. With nearly four decades of sonic exploration, Ozric Tentacles remain a vital and influential force in progressive and psychedelic music scenes worldwide.
