About The Triffids

Formed in Perth in 1980, The Triffids emerged as one of Australia’s most influential folk-pop bands, led by singer-songwriter David McComb alongside his brother Robert on guitar and violin, and drummer Alsy MacDonald. Their sound fused introspective storytelling with influences from the Velvet Underground, blending country, blues, and the stark isolation of David’s rural upbringing. This unique mix shaped vivid narratives of longing and desolation that resonated deeply.

The band expanded its lineup to include bassist Martyn Casey, keyboardist Jill Birt, and steel guitarist Graham Lee, whose addition marked a creative breakthrough. Early releases such as *Treeless Plain* (1983) and the EP *Raining Pleasure* (1984) established their presence in the Australian scene. Their 1986 album *Born Sandy Devotional*, featuring Lee’s evocative steel guitar work, is often viewed as their artistic pinnacle. Following the atmospheric and unconventional recording of *In the Pines* in a wool-shearing shed, The Triffids signed with Island Records, releasing *Calenture* (1987), notable for new guitarist Adam Peters’ involvement.

Despite critical acclaim, their 1989 album *The Black Swan*, produced by Stephen Street, fell short commercially, leading to the band’s dissolution shortly afterward. Post-breakup, McComb continued with the Blackeyed Susans and released the solo album *Love of Will* (1994) before his untimely death in 1999. The Triffids remain celebrated for their authentic Australian songwriting and innovative fusion of folk-rock, securing a lasting legacy in music history.
