About L7

Emerging from Los Angeles in 1985, L7 quickly established themselves as a powerful force in punk and grunge music. Founded by guitarists and vocalists Suzi Gardner and Donita Sparks, with bassist Jennifer Finch and drummer Dee Plakas rounding out the lineup, L7 crafted a raw, aggressive sound blending metal-influenced riffs, throat-shredding vocals, and relentless rhythms. Their name, borrowed from 1950s slang meaning "square," was chosen ironically for a band that defiantly broke conventions.

L7’s early releases—including their 1988 self-titled debut on Epitaph Records and 1991’s "Smell the Magic" on Sub Pop—helped them forge a devoted underground following. They achieved mainstream success with 1992’s breakthrough album, "Bricks Are Heavy," produced by Butch Vig. This record featured the Top 10 alternative hit "Pretend We're Dead" and positioned the band alongside grunge heavyweights like Nirvana. Throughout the 1990s, L7 continued to release notable albums such as "Hungry for Stink" (1994) and "The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum" (1997), earning a reputation for their uncompromising energy and fierce stage presence.

Beyond music, L7 co-founded the Rock for Choice movement, organizing benefit concerts in support of reproductive rights that featured prominent acts including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Neil Young. After a hiatus beginning in 2001, the band reunited in 2014, reigniting their career with a 2015 comeback show, the 2016 documentary "L7: Pretend We're Dead," and the 2019 album "Scatter the Rats" released through Joan Jett's Blackheart Records. With singles like "Burn Baby" and "Stadium West," L7 remains an influential and enduring presence in alternative rock history.
