About Slow J

Slow J, born João in Setúbal near Lisbon, is a trailblazing figure in contemporary Portuguese music, uniquely blending his Portuguese and Angolan heritage into a vibrant, multicultural sound. Raised amid diverse cultures and locations both within Portugal and abroad, his personal journey deeply informs his artistic identity and lyrical themes, reflecting questions of heritage, belonging, and self-discovery.

From an early age, Slow J was captivated by music, developing skills in guitar and music production that fueled his creative ambitions. His passion led him to London to study sound engineering, where he refined his production techniques. Returning to Portugal, he embraced a hands-on, resourceful approach—recording in studios, guesthouses, and even his parents’ bedroom—to craft his distinctive sound.

Slow J’s independent releases, notably the mixtape "The Free Food Tape" (2015) and the album "The Art of Slowing Down" (2017), showcase his introspective lyrics and innovative beats, positioning him at the forefront of Portugal’s evolving hip-hop and alternative music scenes. In 2018, he co-founded the label and production company Sente Isto, further influencing the national soundscape by executive producing Papillon’s acclaimed album "Deepak Looper" (2018).

Through his genre-defying work and entrepreneurial spirit, Slow J continues to shape a new wave of Portuguese artists, redefining cultural expression and musical identity in Portugal.
