About Wednesday

Wednesday is an Asheville-based indie rock band led by songwriter and vocalist Karly Hartzman, known for crafting deeply autobiographical and vividly Southern soundscapes. Blending literary lyricism with raw, gritty instrumentation, Wednesday has carved out a unique niche they call "Wednesday Creek Rock"—a fusion of shoegaze intensity, classic country twang, and outlaw grit. Their breakthrough album, "Rat Saw God" (2021), captures ten evocative portraits of North Carolina’s suburban and rural life, weaving together late-night bike rides, humid Southern summers, and high school football games into a richly textured narrative. Hartzman’s evocative storytelling stands at the heart of the record, her voice cutting through layers of guitar, pedal steel, and atmospheric noise to create an immersive listening experience.

Building on this foundation, Wednesday's follow-up album, "Bleeds" (2023), recorded at Asheville’s Drop of Sun studio with longtime producer Alex Farrar, sharpens their signature style. Featuring bandmates Xandy Chelmis on lap and pedal steel, Alan Miller on drums, Ethan Baechtold on bass and piano, and guitarist Jake "M.J." Lenderman, the album balances noisy sludge with indie-pop hooks and Southern truth-telling. "Bleeds" deepens Wednesday’s exploration of contemporary American life with half-humorous, half-tragic tales delivered through meticulous, place-based poetry and layered instrumentation. Regarded as one of the defining rock acts of their generation, Wednesday continues to redefine the boundaries of indie rock with a sound that is equal parts intimate, expansive, and unmistakably Southern.
