About Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr., formed in 1984 in Amherst, Massachusetts, stands as a seminal force in alternative and indie rock, credited with reintroducing powerful lead guitar and dense, feedback-laden soundscapes to the genre. Founded by J Mascis following the dissolution of his hardcore punk band Deep Wound, the group originally featured Lou Barlow on bass and Murph on drums, establishing the classic trio that shaped their early sound. Their 1985 debut, "Dinosaur," quickly cultivated a devoted following, but it was their 1987 album "You're Living All Over Me" that became an underground milestone, bolstered by the support of contemporaries like Sonic Youth. The single "Freak Scene" from their 1988 album "Bug" further cemented their influence on the post-punk and noise-rock underground.

Despite internal tensions leading to Barlow’s departure in 1989, Dinosaur Jr. persisted through the 1990s, with Mascis largely steering the project solo. Albums such as "Green Mind" (1991) and the chart-reaching "Where You Been" (1993), featuring the hit "Start Choppin," expanded their reach beyond the indie scene. Following a brief disbandment in 1997, the original lineup reunited in 2005, launching a prolific second era marked by critically acclaimed releases including "Beyond" (2007), "Farm" (2009), "I Bet on Sky" (2012), "Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not" (2016), and "Sweep It Into Space" (2021). This latest album featured collaborations with artists like Kurt Vile, highlighting Dinosaur Jr.’s enduring relevance and their lasting imprint on American underground rock history.
