About The Doors

Formed in Los Angeles in 1965, The Doors quickly established themselves as one of the most influential and provocative rock bands of the 1960s. The group originated from UCLA film students Ray Manzarek (keyboards) and Jim Morrison (vocals), joined by drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger. Notably, The Doors distinguished themselves by opting out of a traditional bass player, relying instead on Manzarek’s electrifying electric organ to anchor their sound. This, combined with Morrison’s deep, poetic baritone and enigmatic stage presence, forged a unique musical identity that blended blues, classical, Eastern influences, and pop.

Their breakthrough came with the 1967 release of their self-titled debut album on Elektra Records, featuring the iconic hit "Light My Fire." This record became a defining moment in psychedelic rock, setting a high artistic standard. Subsequent albums like "Strange Days" and "The Soft Parade" showed the band’s willingness to experiment, incorporating brass arrangements with mixed critical reception. The 1971 album "L.A. Woman" marked a return to their blues roots, offering standout tracks before Morrison’s untimely death later that year in Paris, reportedly from a drug overdose.

Morrison’s volatile persona, highlighted by incidents like his 1969 Miami arrest, contributed heavily to The Doors’ enduring mystique. After his passing, the remaining members attempted to continue but eventually disbanded. The Doors’ legacy lives on through numerous reissues, archival live recordings such as "London Fog 1966," and the 1991 Oliver Stone biopic, which reignited global interest. Though Ray Manzarek passed away in 2013, Robby Krieger and John Densmore continue to honor The Doors’ indelible impact on rock music history.
