About Steve Reich

Steve Reich is a legendary composer whose pioneering work in the minimalist movement has profoundly shaped contemporary classical music since the 1960s. Born in New York, Reich’s early musical education included piano lessons, but his true inspiration emerged at fourteen through exposure to Bach, Stravinsky, and bebop jazz. After studying philosophy at Cornell University, where he focused on Wittgenstein, Reich honed his compositional skills at Juilliard alongside peers like Philip Glass, and later completed graduate work at Mills College under Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud.

Reich revolutionized music with innovative experiments using tape loops in pieces like "It’s Gonna Rain" (1965) and "Come Out" (1966), evolving into live phasing works such as "Piano Phase" (1967). His immersive incorporation of non-Western musical traditions—including Ghanaian rhythms and Indonesian gamelan—influenced landmark compositions like "Music for 18 Musicians" (1974-76), which earned him international acclaim. Reich’s unique blending of Jewish cantillation in "Tehillim" (1981) and his Grammy-winning "Different Trains" (1988), a haunting fusion of recorded speech and string quartet, further expanded his artistic range.

Collaborating closely with his wife, Beryl Korot, Reich ventured into multimedia with projects like the opera "The Cave" (1993) and "Three Tales" (1998-2002). His work has inspired DJs and producers in projects such as "Reich Remixed," highlighting his cross-genre impact. Recognized with the Pulitzer Prize for Music (2009), the Polar Music Prize (2007), and multiple Grammy Awards, Steve Reich continues to innovate with recent works like "Pulse" (2016) and "Quartet" (2018), affirming his enduring legacy as a transformative force in modern music.
