About Immortal

Immortal, formed in Bergen, Norway, in 1990 by vocalist/bassist Abbath Doom Occulta and guitarist Demonaz Doom Occulta, is a seminal force in the Norwegian black metal scene. Renowned for crafting the mythical realm of Blashyrkh, a dark fantasy world inspired by Norway's bleak landscapes and harsh climate, Immortal developed a distinctive lyrical and sonic identity that set them apart from their contemporaries. While many peers embraced progressive or classical elements, Immortal remained committed to black metal’s raw, uncompromising core, evolving their sound without losing its primal intensity.

Their early works, including the atmospheric debut "Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism" (1992) and the influential "Pure Holocaust" (1993), established their reputation with relentless blast beats and mythic themes. Following Demonaz’s departure as guitarist in 1997 due to tendonitis, Abbath took over guitar duties, sparking a creative resurgence. This phase produced critical milestones like "At the Heart of Winter" (1999) and "Sons of Northern Darkness" (2002), both recorded with acclaimed producer Peter Tägtgren at Abyss Studios.

After a brief disbandment, Immortal reunited to release "All Shall Fall" (2009), achieving notable chart success in Europe and breaking into the U.S. Billboard 200. Legal disputes led to Abbath's exit in 2015, with Demonaz and drummer Horgh continuing the band. Demonaz returned to guitar and vocals for "Northern Chaos Gods" (2018), reinforcing Immortal’s enduring legacy as a cornerstone of extreme black metal and a tribute to Norway’s frostbitten realms.
