About Godflesh

Godflesh, formed in Birmingham, England in 1988 by Justin Broadrick and B.C. Green, are widely recognized as pioneers of industrial metal and post-metal. They crafted a groundbreaking sound that merged crushing guitar riffs with mechanical drum machine beats and guttural vocals, drawing on post-punk’s raw intensity while pushing the boundaries of extreme metal. Their self-titled EP and seminal debut album "Streetcleaner" (1989) established a powerful new template that influenced heavyweights like Metallica and Korn.

Throughout the 1990s, Godflesh evolved their sound with landmark albums such as "Pure" (1992), "Selfless" (1994), and "Songs of Love and Hate" (1996). These works incorporated diverse elements like breakbeats, dub, and hip-hop, foreshadowing the emergence of nu-metal. They further experimented with drum and bass and dark ambient styles on "Us and Them" (1999). After releasing "Hymns" (2001), the band disbanded, with Broadrick focusing on other projects like Jesu.

Godflesh reunited in 2010 and revived their influential legacy with subsequent releases including "A World Lit Only by Fire" (2014) and the post-punk tinted "Post Self" (2017). Their latest album, "Purge" (2023), revisits earlier hip-hop-infused ideas first explored on "Pure," reinforcing their reputation for relentless innovation. Though never achieving mainstream commercial success, Godflesh’s impact on heavy music remains profound, securing their status as enduring innovators within the industrial and metal genres.
