About Photek

Photek, the stage name of British producer Rupert Parkes, is widely recognized as one of drum’n’bass music’s most innovative and cerebral figures. Beginning his musical journey as a teenager fascinated by electro, techno, hip-hop, jazz, and fusion, Parkes initially released tracks under various aliases such as Studio Pressure, Sentinel, and Code of Practice. His breakthrough emerged in the mid-1990s with intricately crafted drum’n’bass, marked by meticulous rhythm programming and an atmospheric, almost paranoid sound. Influential tracks like “The Hidden Camera” and “UFO” played a key role in reviving dark-style drum’n’bass towards the late 1990s.

Parkes’ career was notably boosted by a £2000 loan from the Trust of the Prince of Wales, enabling him to acquire vital sampling equipment. Early releases appeared on independent labels such as Certificate 18 and Street Beats, after which he signed a five-album deal with Virgin Records’ Science imprint. His critically acclaimed debut album "Modus Operandi" (1997) and the compilation "Form & Function" (1998) solidified his reputation as an electronic music pioneer.

In 2000, Photek expanded his sound with the album "Solaris," embracing Chicago house influences and collaborating with vocalist Robert Owens. Beyond his signature drum’n’bass and house productions, Parkes ventured into film scoring and worked alongside industrial rock icon Trent Reznor on Nine Inch Nails’ "With Teeth" (2005). Following a period of relative quiet, he returned in the early 2010s, collaborating with dubstep producer Pinch and releasing a DJ-Kicks mix that highlighted his versatility across techno and dubstep. Throughout his career, Photek has remained a respected and boundary-pushing artist, shaping the electronic music landscape with his sophisticated and timeless approach.
