About Alannah Myles

Alannah Myles, born in Toronto, is a renowned Canadian rock singer, songwriter, and producer celebrated for her distinctive smoky, soulful voice. Despite initial setbacks in securing a Canadian record deal, she and her songwriting partner Christopher Ward shifted their focus to the American market. Their persistence paid off when a demo and music video for "Just One Kiss," shot by acclaimed cinematographer Deborah Samuel, caught the eye of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

Myles’ eponymous debut album (1989) catapulted her to international fame, anchored by the sultry anthem "Black Velvet." This iconic single not only topped the U.S. charts but also earned a Grammy Award, making her the highest-selling Canadian debut artist at the time. Alongside hits like "Love Is" and "Lover of Mine," the album solidified her reputation as a leading figure in rock music.

Following this breakthrough, she released *Rockinghorse* (1992) and *Alannah* (1995), continuing her collaboration with Atlantic Records. Later, Myles pursued independent projects, including *A Rival* and *85 BPM*, demonstrating artistic versatility while maintaining her rock roots. With multiple Juno Awards and a Grammy among her accolades, Alannah Myles remains an enduring symbol of Canadian rock excellence, best remembered for her timeless hit "Black Velvet" and her soulful vocal artistry.
