About Enigma

Enigma, the visionary musical project founded in 1990 by Romanian-born Michael Cretu, revolutionized electronic and worldbeat music with its unique fusion of new age atmospheres, chilled club rhythms, and haunting Gregorian chant samples. Originating from Cretu’s home studio in Ibiza, Enigma burst onto the global stage with the 1991 debut album *MCMXC a.D.* The record’s lead single, "Sadeness (Pt. I)," became a worldwide sensation, propelling the album to sell over four million copies in the United States alone and sustain a remarkable five-year run on the Billboard Top 200 chart. This innovative blend of sacred chants and modern production was inspired by Cretu’s earlier work with his wife, German pop star Sandra.

Despite legal challenges over unauthorized Gregorian chant samples, Enigma’s artistic momentum continued. Their 1993 follow-up, *Cross of Changes*, introduced Native American influences in hit singles like "Return to Innocence," which soared to the top of the UK charts. Over two decades, Enigma released several acclaimed albums—including *Le Roi Est Mort, Vive le Roi!* (1996), *Screen Behind the Mirror* (2000), and *Voyageur* (2003)—building a dedicated worldwide fan base. The 2016 concept album *The Fall of a Rebel Angel* featured collaborations with international artists such as Anggun and Mark Josher, reaffirming Enigma’s lasting impact on the electronic and new age scenes. Continually evolving yet unmistakably distinct, Enigma remains a pioneering force celebrated for its mesmerizing blend of ancient melodies and contemporary soundscapes.
