About Children of Bodom

Children of Bodom, formed in 1993 in Espoo, Finland, stand as one of the most influential bands in melodic death metal. Founded by guitarist and vocalist Alexi Laiho along with drummer Jaska Raatikainen, the group originally performed under the name Inearthed before rebranding themselves after the notorious Lake Bodom murders near their hometown. Their lineup solidified with bassist Henkka Seppälä and keyboardist Janne Wirman, while guitarist roles evolved over time, including notable members like Alexander Kuoppala and later Roope Latvala.

The band’s breakthrough came with their debut album, "Something Wild" (1997), released through Spinefarm Records, which carved their signature sound—an aggressive yet technically intricate blend of death metal infused with theatrical flair. This success set the stage for critically acclaimed albums such as "Hatebreeder" (1999) and "Follow the Reaper" (2000), which cemented Children of Bodom's reputation. Their 2003 release, "Hate Crew Deathroll," showcased their distinct mix of intense riffs, virtuosic guitar work, and darkly satirical lyrics, earning them Finnish Band of the Year and launching their first world tour.

The band continued to evolve with albums like "Are You Dead Yet?" (2005), and their highest-charting effort, "Blooddrunk" (2008), which featured a memorable cover of "Ghost Riders in the Sky." Their 2013 album, "Halo of Blood," pushed European death metal further into the mainstream, while later works like "I Worship Chaos" (2015)—noted for surprising covers including Bananarama's "Cruel Summer"—and "Hexed" (2019) demonstrated their expanding musical range, incorporating progressive and jazz elements.

After a prolific career spanning over two decades, Children of Bodom played their farewell concert in Helsinki in 2019, a powerful conclusion immortalized on the live album "A Chapter Called Children of Bodom" (2023). The band’s legacy was deeply marred by the untimely death of Alexi Laiho in late 2020, marking the end of an era and solidifying their lasting impact on the global metal scene.
