About Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow, born Barry Alan Pincus on June 17, 1943, in Brooklyn’s working-class Williamsburg neighborhood, is a celebrated figure in soft rock and adult contemporary music. From an early age, he showed musical promise, taking piano and accordion lessons before attending the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, which he supported by working in CBS’s mail room. His early career was shaped through his pivotal role as pianist and musical director for Bette Midler in the early 1970s, a collaboration that opened doors to his own recording contract with Bell Records.

Manilow rose to fame with the 1974 release of "Mandy," a heartfelt ballad that transformed Scott English’s "Brandy" into his first number-one hit. This breakthrough launched a series of chart-topping singles, including "I Write the Songs," "Looks Like We Made It," and the disco-infused "Copacabana (At the Copa)" from the album *Barry Manilow II*. His platinum-selling 1978 album *Even Now* solidified his place at the forefront of pop music. Throughout the late 1970s, Manilow dominated the charts and live venues, epitomizing the era’s polished, emotive sound.

As musical tastes evolved, Manilow demonstrated his versatility by embracing jazz standards, swing, and Broadway influences in projects like *2:00 A.M. Paradise Café* and *Manilow Sings Sinatra*. His passion for musical theater culminated in *Copacabana* and the long-awaited Broadway debut of *Harmony* in 2023. Even well into the 21st century, albums such as *Greatest Songs of the Fifties* (2006) and *Night Songs* (2014)—which earned a Grammy nomination—kept his artistry fresh and relevant.
